When Lois was in high school, she had obtained a reputation as a studious person who rarely, if ever, let her hair down by drinking with her peers. She seemed driven to excel academically so that she would be able to pursue a career that she not only enjoyed but one that also gave her a degree of security from a financial point of view.

After Lois graduated from high school, she applied to and was accepted into a leading program in sociology. Her analysis of her options regarding this decision was based on the fact that this area of study would be a good foundation for law school and would not be similar to the majority of law school applicants who choose political science as their undergraduate minor or major.

Lois was the type of person who worked thoroughly to complete what she started and then would take some time off when she could. As is the case, nevertheless, the vast majority of the things she did between terms or during summer breaks did not involve drinking. Obviously, Lois was anything but a partygoer. Now that her final exams for her second year in law school were done and appreciating the fact that she had done very well on her finals, however, she felt like celebrating.

So Lois and a few of her buddies went to a local saloon where they started to have a few drinks. As the evening proceeded, Lois and her friends continued to drink. If truth be told, she was having such a fabulous time that she didn't want the night to end.

After drinking about an-hour-and-a-half when Lois started to slur her words, speak in a confused manner, and then pass out, however, her buddies immediately realized that they needed to call that they needed to call 911, the emergency services number, and ask for medical assistance because they suspected that Lois was exhibiting alcohol poisoning symptoms.

Lois was conscious of the fact that she came close to losing her life due to an alcohol overdose and, consequently, was thankful to be alive. At the same time, nonetheless, she was somewhat disheartened knowing that she had almost died the previous night. Her parents realized how intensely she studied at the university and how little she let herself socialize with her pals. Nonetheless, they also knew that Lois needed to avoid irresponsible drinking.

As a consequence, they recommended that in the future, whenever a drinking opportunity presents itself, that she always drink responsibly and in moderation. Lois was of the same opinion and swore to her parents and to her friends that she would never again drink in an abusive manner. As stated by Lois, "I never pondered the fact that I would become one of the alcohol poisoning statistics in the local city newspaper. I now know that careless and excessive drinking is not my style. I guarantee that this will never happen again."

Fortunately, Lois was not only "book smart" but she also possessed. Stated another way, she rapidly realized that she had made an error and decided that she would not make the same error in judgment again. In fact, she now realized that she had involved herself in "binge drinking" and that even one instance of this form of abusive and careless drinking can result in death.
